Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Braves v Crown II on Sat 13 Aug 2011 at 12pm
Glenmore Cricket Club Won By 2 Wickets

Match report Cricket as we all know if a game of highs and lows. Just when you think you are invincable Cricket can take you down a notch and let you know just who's boss. You might think this is the opening line to an apology letter about how we lost etc. etc. nothing could be further from the truth. Fact is that Glenmore I beat Crown II at Riley Large by 2 wickets. Its how we got over the line that shows the cruel nature of the game.

Glenmore lost the toss and Crown II chose to bat on one of a handful of absolutely glorious days in Calgary this Summer. Sheraz and Ruwan really started with a great opening bowling partnership. Tight and testing bowling produced the first of 2 great catches by Anand at Square leg. The first to go was the ever dangerous Hamza (used to play in Glenmore colours) who hit a low hard one to Anand who clung on and then Fahad edged a beauty from Ruwan to Burhan behind the stumps and Crown were in trouble.

Sheraz then took another 2 wickets in fairly close succession one faint edge to Burhan and another pull shot straight to that man Anand at square who held on above his head for his best day in the field for Glenmore for a few seasons..

At 4/45 Crown were really struggling and when the ball was thrown to Bobby for first change a lovely inswinger took out Muzzafar and Crown were looking hard pressed to make 100.

With consistent pressure in the field and with tight bowling Glenmore managed to keep Crown to 99 and only a last wicket stand of 18 from Wajahat and Umar got them close. Ali chipped in for a well deserved wicket as did Nasir who was chaffing at the bit to even get a bowl as the Glenmore bowlers fought over the crumbs of the Crown innings. Sharaz came back eager to try for 5 but only managed a fantastic spell of 4/13 from his 10. Bobby always seems to be in the wickets now as his inswing bowling has come of age this season picking up 2/35. Ali bowled extremely well picking up 2/37 and is a great new addition to Glenmore.

After a fantastic lunch of curry chicken provided by Trevor Glenmore set out with steely determination to chase down the 100 runs in style. Alas despite the good intentions Glenmore found themselves in real trouble. First to go was Bray first out LBW off the 3rd ball from a big inswinger that would have been missing leg by a decent margin. Nasir unfortunately forgot that on the line is out and was nonchalantly standing a little too far out for comfort and paid for it with the bails coming off and a trudge back to the benches. Glenmore had lost both openers for ducks which has not happened in living memory. The ever capable Burhan was joined by Anil Joshi and after a few scares Anil unfortunately self destructed on an attempted run after hitting the ball straight to the fielder. The wobble at the top of the innings was slowed by a lovely little partnership between Burhan and Anand who wore down the bowlers inflicting the ever evil right hand, left hand combination which really frustrated the Crown attack. Anand then caught the crazy Glenmore running disease and hit one hard and straight to mid off chancing the run anyway. Suffice to say that he never made it.

1 dodgy LBW and 3 crazy run outs later and Glenmore were in real trouble. They say that captaincy is rewarding, challenging and difficult. After todays game I think its just plain stressful. Glenmore were 4 for not many and Ruwan joined Burhan who at this point was holding the innings together. Unfortunately Ruwan could not replicate his exploits from last weekends win and skied one to mid off. Anjan followed suit not quite hitting over the top and despite the low number of runs needed (20 at this point) wickets continued to fall. Trevor was at the receiving end of the second shocker of the day being given out run out when his bat was just about to pass the stumps as the bails came off. With Trev trudging off for another duck with only Burhan still at the crease the only batsman to be over double figures one would not even conceive that this mostly same team had blasted 280 the previous week.

Sheraz joined Burhan and less than 10 runs were needed when once again another Glenmore wicket went to the Umpiring grave in the sky. Fired out LBW from another ball heading so far down legside that all the stunned Glenmore bench could do was look in disbelief as the finger went up. Burhan finished with a solid 40.

8 wickets down 3 umpiring stunners 3 self inflicted run outs and 2 indifferent shots and Crown had a real sniff of pulling off a miracle win.

Bobby joined Sheraz and the two of them set about milking wides and a no ball to enable Glenmore to squeak over the line for a win with Sheraz 1 not out and Bobby adding to his burgeoning average with 0 not out.

2 wins on the trot. Both go in the book simply as 6 points each on the table but each win could not have been further apart in execution. The ups and downs of cricket is why we love it and sometimes dislike it strongly :-)

Many celebratory beers were downed at Fats as we relished in our narrow escape from grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory. When you can pull of a tight win and everything is going against you its a great feeling.

Cheers Glenmore congrats on a great win.
