Fluor Cricket Club v Glenmore Cricket Club Glenmore Taverners on Mon 28 May 2012 at 6:00 PM
Glenmore Cricket Club Lost by 64 runs

Match report The Glenmore Taverners finally got their season under way at Westwinds on monday evening. Despite suffering a heavy loss, the Tavs played with good spirit and smiles on their faces.

Captain Jon Smith lost the toss and was soon leading his troops out into the field. The Fluor batsmen were quick to play their shots, which weren't particularly elegant or orthodox, and they rode their luck against Ron Jadusingh and Shahid Qureshi. However, Ron was able to pick up a wicket during his four over spell, having the Fluor opener expertly caught by the lithe, sprightly Neil Honess at backward point. Neil could easily have been day dreaming of his holiday to Tanzania but he remained alert and took an excellent catch.

Jon Smith was the next Taverners bowler to strike. He found a perfect line and length to defeat the Fluor batsman's defences and knock over middle stump.

The only other Tavs bowler to have success was Mr Alex Robertson. Normally such a mild mannered chap, he turned into a screaming, shouting, fist-pumping brute when his away swing found the edge and the catch was neatly taken by Alex Storey behind the stumps. It truly was a remarkable celebration from Robbo.

Fluor's total of 175 was always likely to be a big ask for the Tavs, and they got off to the worst possible start when Storey was out in just the second over. That brought Glenmore debutant David Sherjan to the middle, and together with Gurvinder Ahuja they set about rebuilding the innings. Both played sensibly, running well between the wickets and putting away anything slightly loose. Gurvinder was unfortunately run out for a well made 30, but Sherjan continued to dominate the bowling and raced to an unbeaten 33 with a series of booming sixes over midwicket.

Sadly no other batsmen were able to make a telling contribution. Anil played some nice shots during his 10, and there was a moment of calamity between Smith and Robertson which ended in Robbo being run out for 3.

In the end the Taverners fell well short of the total, but there were some encouraging performances with the bat from Gurvinder and Sherjan, and hopefully there will be many more notable performances from the Tavs during the 2012 season.
